Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. While a small girl, Ford was battling anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted by the word association. Ford began to become interested in acting during her teenaged years, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford was then able to apply for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, she made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately becoming a member of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her comedy stand-up, which became part of her portfolio in 1996.
