Her parents are clinical psychotherapist and the owner of an ice cream establishment. She went to Wardlaw-Hartridge School, and following the divorce of parents 1990 she enrolled at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, eventually graduating with a bachelor's degree in comparative arts. In the early years of her professional career, she was just 12 years old when she performed on stage in the production of an opera called "Amahl's Night People".
